Harry Maybourne
Colonel Harry Maybourne replaced Colonel Kennedy as head of stargate mission analysis, and became the de-facto head of the NID. He was first encountered by SG-1 when he attempted to take custody of the Tollan refugees, hoping to force them to provide Earth with advanced technology against their will. He was foiled in this by the advanced equipment of the Tollans and SG-1's assistance to the Tollans.

When Teal'c had been infected with an alien virus which would result in his death and the birth of about 10 large flying insects that would spread the virus, Maybourne took custody of Teal'c, pretending to intend to help him, but really intending to let Teal'c's fate happen. He hoped that the bugs would prove useful as a weapon. However, Teal'c escaped, and SG-1 managed to find and cure Teal'c before Maybourne could regain custody.

Maybourne was instrumental in engineering up a covert rogue NID stargate team operating from the second stargate, secreted away to a Utah facility. The primary purpose of this operation was to steal technology from allies and neutrals among the stargate network. Maybournes' primary role was in covering up the fact that the second gate was missing. SG-1 was able to uncover the plot, shut down the operation, and recover the second gate, but Maybourne's involvement could not be proven.

Maybourne responded to this setback by operating rogue NID teams already off world, using a sympathetic person in the SGC (Colonel Robert Makepeace) to funnel back stolen technology. This operation was uncovered by Jack O'Neill, and Makepeace and the off world agents were arrested and imprisoned. Maybourne's involvement was uncovered as well, but he eluded capture.

Maybourne was next encountered working with the Russians, who had set up a stargate operation using the original Giza stargate, which had been recovered from the Pacific Ocean floor. Though Maybourne assisted SG-1 in dealing with a situation the Russians had gotten into, he was, nonetheless arrested and imprisoned.

When rogue NID elements had used threats against General Hammond's family to force his retirement, Jack O'Neill convinced Maybourne to help him rectify the situation. Maybourne agreed and disclosed Senator Robert Kinsey's involvement with the rogue NID operations. He also helped O'Neill gain evidence to force Kinsey to arrange Hammond's re-enstatement. As a reward, Maybourne was moved to nicer prison facilities, from which he easily escaped.

Maybourne then became a freelance "dirty tricks" man, but could not resist temptations to be the good guy, again. He assisted SG-1 twice again against corrupt Earth side forces, saving the lives of both Samantha Carter and Teal'c.

Maybourne managed to trick the SGC into getting him to a planet from which he could transport himself to a Furling utopia. Unfortunately, he managed to get both himself and O'Neill trapped there, and found that the utopia had long since been wiped out by a drugged plant which caused the inhabitants to kill each other off. After they were rescued, O'Neill arranged with the Tok'ra to place Maybourne on a new planet,

On his new home planet, Harry Maybourne ingratiated himself with the inhabitants by introducing new technologies, agricultural methods, etc. He also used the inscriptions left by an Ancient time-traveler to make predictions which helped the people, and convinced them he was a prophet. He was named King Arkhan I, and married three wives. When SG-1 arrived on the planet to warn Harry that the goa'uld Ares was on the way to take possession of the planet, Harry was not surprised, as one of the inscriptions described how off-worlders would help defeat the return of Ares. Sg-1 found an ancient Puddle-Jumper and destroyed, and O'Neill and Carter used it to destroy Ares' ship, while Maybourne, the rest of SG-1, and Harry's people defeated Are's advance force. Though the truth of Harry's prophecies was revealed, Harry still had the love of his new people, grateful for his actions, wise leadership, technological and agricultural innovations, etc. They chose to retain him as ruler, now with all of his secrets out in the open.

Harry Maybourne is one of the best developed and multi-faceted of the recurring characters in the series. Initially, an un-likable corrupt military bureaucrat, Maybourne slowly developed into a more likable, flawed rogue, with many more qualities, both positive and negative. Also, with time, episodes featuring him became more humorous.

This character's appearance in Inauguration was in archival footage.
