Walter Harriman is a master sergeant in the United States Air Force, assigned to Stargate Command. He is primairily a stargate technician, running the dialing computer and other equipment from the Control Room. His duties, at times, seem to include a sort of administrative assistant position to Brigadier General Jack O'Neill. His skills have also landed him temporary assignments aboard the
Prometheus.
This character's name has been a source of irritation for many fans of
Stargate SG-1. Originally, the character was always credited as 'Technician' and addressed as "Sergeant". Many fans began identifying him as "Harriman" after they thought they heard the name used. He'd actually been addressed as "airman", and the character wore a simple nametag with the name "Davis", or (later) coveralls with the name "Norman Davis". In the season 4
2010, he was addressed by Jack O'Neill as "Walter", an homage to Gary Jones' resemblance to
M*A*S*H's Walter O'Reilly. Thereafter, his name was assumed by most fans to be "Walter Davis". In the eighth season of
Stargate SG-1, the character has been addressed as "Walter" or "Sergeant Harriman", firmly establishing the name as 'Walter Harriman'. This also let the fans know that their earlier mistake did not go unnoticed.
This character's status on the show has changed. Initially he was always given a guest credit. Then, for a few episodes the role was reduced to the supporting cast. It was restored to guest cast, and has remained so ever since.
