Stardates: 54775.4--The Voyager receives orders from Starfleet to find the Earth probe Friendship 1, which lost contact with Earth 130 years ago, and was last known to be near the Voyager's current position in the Delta Quadrant. The crew locates readings from the probe on a nearby planet, which is undergoing a nuclear winter.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the planet used the data stored in the probe to develop antimatter technology, but an accidental antimatter explosion destroyed the planet's environment and flooded the atmosphere with deadly radiation. When Lt. Paris, Neelix, and Lt. Joe Carey go down to retrieve the probe, they are taken hostage by the aliens, who hold Earth responsible for the radiation that is poisoning their planet.
