The episode begins its narrative in late December 2004, over ninety days after the crash of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815. The battle between the crash survivors and the dangerous and mysterious island inhabitants referred to as the "Others" comes to a head as ten of the Others attack and are then ambushed at the survivors' camp and are subsequently killed.

Meanwhile, Jack Shephard leads most of the survivors to the island's radio tower to communicate with a nearby ship. Intercut with this story are off-island scenes spotlighting Jack, who has become suicidally depressed and addicted to painkillers. In a twist ending, it is revealed that these scenes are flashforwards to sometime in the future, after Jack has left the island, rather than flashbacks as in previous episodes of Lost.

Goof: Throughout this episode in "real time" on the island, Jack has salt/pepper stubble and you can clearly see patches of gray stubble below his sideburns and along is lower jaws. In the flash forward scenes Jack has a full beard, and it is all black, there's no gray at all in his beard.

Trivia: The name of the Looking-Glass station is a reference to the children's book entitled 'Through the Looking-Glass' by Lewis Carroll, in which changes in time are a prevalent theme. Consequently, the name of the Looking-Glass station could be viewed as a plot device intended to symbolize the transition from the use of flashbacks to events prior to the crash to of Oceanic 815 to the use of flash-forwards depicting the lives of the Oceanic 6 after their rescue from the island.
